“Should” is a dangerous shorthand

“Should” is a dangerous shorthand.

You should do this. Why should you do this? Because this is good for you (or for me really).

Good for you in what sense? For your health? For your survival? To solve a particular problem you're struggling with? To fall in line with social conventions?

I don't like to should on people. Something in me twitches when someone shoulds on me.

I prefer the long form. You should meditate = You might find yourself happier if you meditate more. You should exercise = You will feel strong if you exercise. You should eat healthy = You might have more energy and stamina if you eat healthier.

It's a slight modification but it cuts out points of contention and confusion. Why should I do this? Ah, because of this particular outcome.

Propose the outcome of an action, avoid shorthanding via should.
