don't be that fly

Don't be that fly.

No, I don't recommend it. Don't be that insect that keeps bumping into the window.

You’re looking for a way out. The path looks clear. You charge ahead. Boom, knocked back.

What happened? You probably have no idea. Okay, try again. And again. And again.

You've probably seen this happen—a fly keeps charging against the window. We all know it won't break through.

Just a few feet away is the open door. A small shift in direction is the path to freedom. And yet, most flies will repeat the same charge until they die.

Don't be that fly.

How many times do we do the same thing in our lives? In a relationship, a career, or a hope for something to work out, we sometimes rely on brute force. Trying the same thing over and over, simply increasing effort, is not the formula for change.

This metaphor from the book you² by Price Pritchett struck me.

It’s not saying, “Don’t fly,” nor is it suggesting you abandon effort. It’s calling for awareness and creativity in seeking alternative paths.

When you feel stuck, ask yourself: What can I do to stop hitting the window? What direction can I turn to find the open door?
