don't decide when you're sick
You know that foggy, everything-is-too-much feeling when you're sick? That’s not the time to make life decisions — so don’t.
When you're sick, it's not just your body that’s weakened. Your whole system — your mind and your emotions too — is in a compromised state.
I was reminded of this the other day when I caught a cold and had to cancel a music gig. Every inbound request — to help find a replacement, to get a bill settled, or whatever to-do was on my list — felt like a much heavier burden. Even little things felt like too much. I was overwhelmed and snapping at texts that wouldn’t normally bother me.
There’s always something to do, and even when sick, I feel like I need to figure things out. But when you’re sick, it’s not the right time to decide anything. That’s when you’re more likely to:
- make mistakes
- take things personally
- get snappy
I know that’s what happens for me.
So whatever decisions can be postponed — and that usually means most or all of them — should be. When you're recovered, when you're actually able in mind and body, then you can take care of what needs your attention.
You can clean up the messes later. Just don’t make new ones while your brain’s offline.
The best decision you can make is to take care of yourself.
