power: a mix of preparation and circumstance

No one gets power by merit alone.

By power, I don’t necessarily mean domination or control — I mean the ability to shape, contribute, and be seen.

Seizing power requires two things: preparation and circumstance.

We can only control the former. At best, we can influence the latter.

Whatever your path — artist, leader, entrepreneur — your job is to hone your craft and share it.

But even the best product, the most beautiful work, may go unrecognized.

Preparation is necessary. But not sufficient.

The rest is putting yourself in the right place at the right time. Connecting with the right people. Being visible in rooms where your work might matter.

This is not a directly controllable circumstance. It is only something you can influence.

Putting your work out there — performing, sharing, speaking up — plants seeds for opportunity. A friend may remember that you write, that you play music, that you build products. And when that friend is in a position to offer an opportunity, they may think of you and give you the call.

No one in a position of power is there by merit alone. Luck plays a role — always.

Focus on what you can shape. Prepare deeply. Share freely.

And trust that some seeds will land in fertile soil.
