recording good (not great) musical moments
Fun task I'm taking on: video and audio recording myself playing music at every opportunity.
This task isn't well defined yet. That's okay -- part of the point is that I just want to move towards capturing content and then habituating myself to sharing that content. The goal is not greatness or perfection but good enoughness. The idea is that as I do more and more, the quicker I will learn. The more and the shorter the iterations, the tighter the feedback loop, and the quicker the model (that's me) learns and adapts to some goal.
We're going for unsupervised learning here as the objectives are vague. I sense there's great value in sharing my musical output -- it gets a recollection of me in front of others, a broadcasting of myself that increases the odds of people calling me for gigs, collaborations, or just good old hangouts. I think of it as increasing the surface area of my API so that others can connect to me. That's the broader goal -- creating and sharing videos with some standard of quality may lead to that goal.
Honestly, it just feels good to connect with new and old friends. A step above that is to create art that moves people so that when they listen, there is a positive state change. Beyond survival in the game of being a professional artist, that is one of the major markers of success.
So far, the objective has been simple: get high-quality audio while playing sitar alongside a pretty backdrop and with fellow musicians. I am seeing the output so far be boring videos. The feedback loop is harsh but so, so good -- I see the videos aren't going to capture attention. So I begin to ponder -- actively and in the background processes of my mind -- what can make the videos more engaging without losing authenticity or feeling out of alignment. I'm not a huge fan of gimmicks (yet), so right now I'm thinking of the following improvements for engagement: 1) have text overlays against the videos sharing thoughts of my playing and process, 2) having the videos digitally modified to zoom in or create angles to keep viewers' attention engaged, 3) explore AI video media that can consume the videos and output some cool creative overlay or filter that makes the videos unique.
Let's explore!
