short and silly

Short and silly is good for you.

I love dumb, random facts—especially when I can weave them into conversations or comedic bits. They add a touch of fun to everyday life.

For example, did you know that a compound called cucurbitacins is what makes cucumbers bitter? Or that hippos secrete something called hipposudoric acid, which is essentially their version of sweat?

Are these facts useful for daily life? Not really. But when the opportunity arises to share them, they usually bring a smile to someone’s face.

Setting Up the Perfect Bit

One of my favorite setups involves a classic misdirection:

“You know, I read Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations recently, and some of the quotes really struck me. My favorite one is: ‘A bitter cucumber? Throw it away.’”

Then, I just pause and wait. The awkwardness and absurdity usually get a good laugh.

Finding Joy in the Little Things

Embracing these dumb, silly tidbits helps me find more joy in the everyday—a laugh here, a smile there.

What short and silly things will you use to brighten your days?
