Sometimes the best thing for an in-progress song is to let it sit.

Sometimes the best thing for an in-progress song is to let it sit.

I wrote the first draft of lyrics for a new song — I wasn't thrilled with the first draft, but I knew I needed to put something down. I needed a first draft — and ultimately, whether it was perfect or not didn't matter. I need songs for this record, and a complete song is better than an unfinished one.

After writing four more songs, I returned to this one. I did not like the lyrics on the verses at all. I knew they needed a change.

Having the space to return to that song gave me knew perspectives on how I could write it. It gave me time to process the song itself and the meaning I wanted to convey. I also had the benefit of writing more songs, sharpening my songwriting tools and having primed my mind for more creativity.

I was able to rewrite the problematic lyrics into something I'm proud of. I'm happy I gave the song the time it needed to breath before coming back and polishing it.
