luxury beliefs vs. luxury perspectives
Some ideas cost more to believe in than others.
Some views only feel true when you can afford the view.
That’s what makes them a luxury.
luxury beliefs
Coined by Rob Henderson, a luxury belief is a fashionable opinion you can afford to hold.
Usually because you won’t suffer if it backfires.
You say “college is a scam,” but you already have a degree.
You say “monogamy is outdated,” but your kids live in a stable home.
You say “defund the police,” but your building has a doorman.
They’re not always wrong.
But they’re not always real.
They signal something: class, status, or a kind of cultural capital.
luxury perspectives
There’s another flavor: the luxury perspective.
This one doesn’t tell others how to think or vote.
It tells a story about how the world is.
“Everything happens for a reason.”
“Money isn't everything.”
“The future is bright—look at how much AI will help.”
Maybe.
But it’s easier to say that when your Bitcoin bag hit six figures
and you don’t need a job anymore.
beliefs tell you what to do. perspectives tell you how to see.
Both are shaped by privilege.
Both can feel true if your needs are met.
But when you say these things around people who are struggling,
they don’t land as wisdom.
They land as distance.
As being out of touch.
Luxury beliefs distort justice.
Luxury perspectives distort reality.
Hold either lightly.
