new contact policy
Making new friends is its own ritual, and a critical part is exchanging contact information. The first meet pries the door to friendship ajar, but it's the follow-up and subsequent encounters that can fully open that door and bring both of us to a friendship.
Putting someone in your phone contacts is fine; writing a note for who they are is better. Exchanging a text with your name is fine; exchanging a text with some context is even better.
I want to set a new policy for myself that internally automates my thought process around connecting with someone. When I want to stay in touch, I'll state that I'd like to connect and present my phone to enter contact info (or use that new iPhone feature where you just bring phones together, and boom, contact shared). To follow up, I'll then send a text loosely in the following format:
{my name} <> {their name} -- let's chat about {context}.
This shares the context between contacts so that you can both be on the same page when you pick up communication again.
